This exterior renovation of the Saint-Mary-on-the-Lake campus offers the Sisters, staff and visitors more flexibility moving about their outdoor space. Accessible pathways were added, and parking lots amidst thick vegetation were re-surfaced and newly covered. A landscaped hillside leading down to the Peace and Spirituality center features a stairway with handrails, resting benches and arbors. Elsewhere, a new winding path allows the sisters to access the lake without navigating a steep slope.
Lighting throughout the wooded site reveals walkways and stairs, select trees and sculptures, and gracefully blends new visible fixtures with old. Bollards and pedestrian poles are in-keeping with the 1960’s vintage architecture. In addition to softly uplit parking structures, light fixtures are occasionally mounted to trees and focus light down on feature elements. Night-time illumination of pathways, benches, statues, and significant vegetation, provide a lovely view to those looking out from nearby interior dwelling spaces. A specific request was made not to call undue attention to the site and structures, as viewed from the street or lake front.
