Hired to help with the "pool lighting calculations" at an alpine residential development, SparkLab convinced the owner NOT to light their pool with floodlights to meet the high light levels requested for building permit. Instead, we found we could meet the requirement with small fixtures located relatively low around the fenced-in pool yard, spill light from surrounding building mount direct/indirect sconces and select strategically aimed fixtures from a nearby roof. The small fence lights were found to be appealing and used elsewhere around the development instead of bollards. Low cost uplights were also placed elsewhere on nearby residential units to light wood surfaces, contribute ambiance and a neighborhood-worthy appearance. Keeping dark-sky considerations in mind, downlight-only fixtures were used where uplight was found to be less useful.
